Cyberpunk
Fall 2020
California School Of the Arts
Course Description:
What is Cyberpunk? For this course, we will be exploring the Cyberpunk genre, looking at different examples of it in fiction and media. The goal of the semester is to present an example of Cyberpunk to the class and to create your very own example of the genre.
Class Expectations:
Students will respect one another in the class. Please show up on time for synchronous classes – five minutes late will be considered tardy. Videos and mics are not required, but participation is. Asynchronous assignments will be posted at the beginning of the week and are expected to be finished by the due date.
Late/Missing Work Policy: Late/Missing work will be accepted throughout the semester. For activities and assignments, any late work will be given half credit after the initial due date. For any major assignments, grades will go down one point for each week it is late.
Grading Categories & Percentages:
Synchronous Participation: 25% of the grade
During Synchronous classes, participation will be measured by a combination of in-class activities, full-class and small group discussions, and engagement with the material. You are not required to have the video on, but are encouraged to use the mic or Zoom chat option.
Asynchronous Participation: 25% of the grade
Asynchronous participation on Mondays will be graded by the weekly assignments, whether they come in the form of prompts, discussion boards, or other various activities. Each assignment will be awarded credit/no credit. Each assignment will have its own due date.
Genre Exploration: 25% of the grade
Over the semester, you will be asked to find an example of the Cyberpunk genre in our culture, whether it be a book, short story, movie, TV show, videogame, or any other storytelling device. We will be creating websites through Google Drive (which we will learn together). Webpage is due Thursday, Nov. 12 by 11:59 pm.
Cyberpunk Story: 25% of the grade
Another aspect of this course is to put the genre into practice. For this project, you will create your own cyberpunk story. This could come in the form of a first chapter of a larger piece, a short story, screenplay, or another form of your choosing. This piece will be graded on creativity and effort put into the work. Assignment due Thursday, Dec. 10 by 11:59 pm.
