Email: daniel.strasberger@sgv.csarts.net
Time: Thursdays 7th and 8th Blocks (2:45-5:00 pm) in room 210
Course Description:
This semester, you will be choosing a passion project to work on. What is a story you want to work on, but have not been able to because of other various projects in the Conservatory? This will be a newly created project, which you will learn how to draft, peer workshop, and refine into an official thesis. The goal of this assignment will be to create a thesis-sized genre of your choice (40-pages of prose, 50-pages of screenplay/playwriting, 25-30 pages of poetry, or any equivalent discussed throughout the semester).
Class Expectations:
1. Explore the creative process in a subject of your choosing
2. Improve editing and re-writing skills
3. Learn how to critique (and be critiqued) constructively
4. Learn about varied techniques of writing
Grading Categories & Percentages:
Warm-Up Assignments: 0% of the grade (Formative Assignment)
At the start of every class, you will be given a warm-up activity to get started with the day. Where these assignments will not count toward your overall grade, you will often be asked to use these assignments in your Reflection assignments and are important parts to your learning process.
Reflection Assignments: 50% of the grade
An important aspect of learning a new form is reflecting on different aspects of the form and the storytelling. Reflections could come in the form of reflecting on your writing process throughout the semester, peer workshops, or various readings and discussions we have along the way. Assignments should be submitted through Google Classroom, and if it is submitted as a document, either through google docs or in PDF form.
Thesis: 50% of the grade
The end of the semester goal for this class is to create a thesis-sized assignment by the end of the semester. This could come in the form of 40-pages of prose, 50-pages of screenplay/playwriting, 25-30 pages of poetry, or any equivalent discussed throughout the semester. This thesis is not so much looking to be a well-polished piece as it is to be a completed passion project, and each will require their own version of the project, and be graded on an individual basis. The thesis will be due on the last day of class Thursday, May 4th by the end of the day.
