CW: Flash Fiction and Poetics
California School of the Arts - 9th to 12th Grade
Course Description:
Flash fiction, micro fiction, prose poetry, how do you define these texts? Through the course of this semester, we will do just that. Starting with poetry, we will build off the foundations and explore different, hybrid forms. We will explore theoretical texts, analyze different examples of the form, and try our hand at different techniques. This course will culminate in a final portfolio, where you take activities and create a finished piece.
Class Expectations:
Students will respect one another in the class. Please show up on time for synchronous classes – five minutes late will be considered tardy. Videos are required (except for those on the exempt list), but you can participate either through a mic or via the chat option.
Late/Missing Work Policy: Late/Missing work will be accepted throughout the semester. For activities and assignments, any late work will be given half credit after the initial due date. For any major assignments, grades will go down one point for each week it is late.
Grading Categories & Percentages:
Synchronous Participation: 20% of the grade
During Synchronous classes, participation will be measured by a combination of in-class activities, full-class and small group discussions, and engagement with the material. Video will be required for participation credit (except for those who are exempt). Participation could come through the form of discussion through the mic or chat options.
Reading Responses: 20% of the grade
Every week for homework, you will be assigned a different theoretical reading based on the subject we will discuss in the next period. A reading response will be posted each week in order to engage with the reading. These responses will be due before the next class period for discussion.
Free Write: 30% of the grade
Every week an hour will be designated to your own writing (usually from 3-4). During that time, you will be given a certain prompt based off the lessons of that day. The activity will be due at the end of that class period. The activity will be graded on completeness, not on the quality of work.
Final Portfolio: 30% of the grade
The final portfolio will be due on the final day of class and submitted via Schoology. Each portfolio should include at least five revised pieces, which could contain a mix of flash fiction, prose poetry, or other activities done for the Free Write. You will be graded on the improvement of the pieces.
